5 ways to keep cool in an Otaki summer

Yippee, it’s summer time, and you know what that means, the temperature is rising and it's going to be hot, hot, hot! But fear not! Armed with your ice cubes and a little plan you can stay cool in an Otaki summer. Here are five ways to beat the heat this summer:

Dress for Success
If you want to look and feel super cool on summer's hottest days, then think fashion! Dark colours just won't cut in the head, choose light-weright fabrics, loose-fitting. Finish off your summer outfit with a funky hat to keep the sun off your head.

Eat Smart
Some fruit and veggies are almost completely name up of water. Like melon and cucumber, they'll keep  you hydrated and cool you down. Try and keep away from heavy dinners, they can be difficult to digest. To keep hydrated try and stay away from caffeine, alcohol and salt.

Stay Hydrated
I know what you saying, that is an obvious statement, but H2O is the way to go! Make sure you'e always got a water bottle with you.

Seek Out The Shade
Have fun in the sun, but take sometime to seek out the shade. You can always take refuge under your beach umbrella, the beach pavilion or a lovely shady tree.  But if you do spend time in the sun, remember slip, slop, slap!

Go Bare - From The Neck Up
Your body's temperature is controlled by your head and neck. If you've got long hair, pin it up and keep your neck bare.

Keep cool and a cucumber this summer, stay sun smart and you'll have an Otaki summer to remember.

The Long Walk Home (Day 2) - By Zoe Mounsey

The Long Walk Home – day two Day two started very early for me and I was soon on the train to Mana ready to do it all again – a hot bath and a good night’s sleep had ensured that I was still raring to go.  My walking partner was not quite so raring to go as was suffering from a sore ankle but she had strapped it up and joined me at the start. The words of encouragement on the second day were from Porirua’s mayor and we were soon on our way.

Then and Now

Otaki has come along way, the beautiful Rangiatea Church was destroyed in a horrific fire, but rebuilt by the community, there is amazing shopping on the main highway and on Main street, the Beach Pavillion is still used the by public.   It may not be a post office anymore, but it's a well used and well loved building housing cultural art work. We've put togther a couple of then and now photographs. What do you remember from this wonderful town ?
