Festival of the Wind! By Colin McKenzie

I had only heard about the Otaki Festival of the Wind a few days before. Otaki Beach seemed like a good place to rendezvous with friends and I thought I could get some colourful photos.
The weather on Saturday 9th of March was warm and sunny with a steady sea breeze.

The organisers, Otaki Village Promotions Group, with support from the Rotary Club of Otaki and Beach FM, would no doubt have been delighted with the ideal conditions and the enthusiastic crowd that turned up.  I had heard that the wind was a bit strong for some of the larger kites like the crab and the puffer fish but just bobbing around on the sand they were still a great sight to see.

It was lovely to see lots of children launching their kites, too, with help from mums and dads.  In two hours I saw dozens of brilliantly coloured kites soaring, fluttering, dipping and diving; I only wished I could have stayed
longer.

Otaki Beach seemed to be the perfect venue for watching kites.  Spectators had an elevated view on grassy banks but could still get a closer view from parts of the beach and the food stalls seemed to be doing well.  It was a fantastic free local event and I hope it becomes an established annual occasion.  I certainly look forward to going next time.
