Golden Oldies Mini Tournament - By Barbara Allen

Sunday 7th April 2013 at the Rahui Rugby grounds in Jim Spiers Lane, Otaki will see the start of the Golden Oldies Rugby season. A mini tournament with half the teams from the Wellington region is being run from 11am – 7pm. Admission is free for any who may like to come and watch.

For the uninitiated, Golden Oldies is a sports movement catering to those 35 years old and upwards who no longer want to play competitive rugby but who still like to get out on the paddock and have a run. Netball and cricket are also included within the Golden Oldies sports but rugby has the highest profile in this region.

An annual ‘Wool-sale’ is held at the end of every year and the teams in the Wellington district get together and organise who will play who as well as when and where. Some 5-6 games are held at ‘Home’ and 5-6 more are ‘Away’.

For our local Otaki team, The Gazbos, the Pub Charity donation towards buses means that our whole team, associate members, supporters and families can travel together to the ‘Away’ venue. Often family members in different areas take this opportunity to meet and catch up and several of our elder members, who can no longer drive, enjoy the chance to travel further afield. The Club is very grateful to Pub Charity for their support.

New members are always welcomed, both female and male. The netball is in need of some fresh input and cricket has now been added to the club’s itinerary.

Then and Now

Otaki has come along way, the beautiful Rangiatea Church was destroyed in a horrific fire, but rebuilt by the community, there is amazing shopping on the main highway and on Main street, the Beach Pavillion is still used the by public.   It may not be a post office anymore, but it's a well used and well loved building housing cultural art work. We've put togther a couple of then and now photographs. What do you remember from this wonderful town ?

Our Walk in the Forest....

One mum, one uncle and two nephews, our walk in the Forest at Otaki Beach near the Otaki Health Camp.  It was a beautiful day and the boys loved exploring the forest, running through the pine needles, playing in the trees, Mr 8 Months had a great time hanging out in the baby pack, first with Mum, then with his Uncle.
